Fitness Modeling

Do you like to take care of your physical appearance? female fitness modeling

Do you like to lift weights and keep your body in peak shape?

Want to know if you have what it takes to be a fitness model?  Our professional scouts are ready to review your photos and tell you if you’ve got the potential to get into this exclusive modeling category.  Click here and start the process now!  Don’t waste time, you can be on your way in just a few days.

With all the focus over the past 10 years on health and fitness, fitness modeling has sparked the interest of many bodybuilders and other athletes. Beautiful bodies are becoming more mainstream on TV, feature films and magazine covers. Businesses are spending a record of over $160 million every month on advertising diet and exercise related products - so there’s a growing demand for fitness models.

The Looks

male fitness modeling

The first thing you have to understand before getting into this business is that modeling is very subjective, although the requirements for fitness and athletic modeling are not as stringent as runway or fashion modeling.

There really are no specific height requirements like there is in runway or fashion modeling, and that’s reflected in agencies men’s and women’s boards. Agencies represent females that stand only 5′2″ tall, and male fitness models standing over 6′5″ tall. However, if you really have to have a guideline for your own comfort level, then some agencies prefer to have women between 5′6″ and 5′10″ tall and men between 5′10″ and 6′2″ tall.

Fitness models from 18 years of age and up get jobs in the industry.  It can also be tough to pin down other requirements as well. Body types can vary widely, but it’s safe to say that you should be in-shape. Most people relate fitness modeling to the bodybuilding-type body, but it’s really more inclusive of other in-shape bodies including strength athletes with thicker torsos and tennis players with thinner but toned bodies. Female fitness models should have nice abs and curves without being too ripped.

The most subjective of the requirements can be facial beauty. Face can sometimes be overlooked when the model is a star athlete, but for most male fitness models a nicely chiseled face with a strong jaw line is a big plus. For female fitness models, its important not to get so lean that your face sinks in.

Your photos must capture your body in your best shape.  To prepare, set a date just as if you were going to compete (think of photo shoot day as “the contest”) and then train for the photo shoot. Go outside and do some really COOL photos in some cool places… not just boring studio stuff. Go do it! Capture yourself on film in everyday activities- you’ll be so glad you did.

The Attitude

Given all the exercise fitness models do, it’s no wonder that working models are happy and take great pride in the way look.  Most models are involved in their community and participate in competitive sports like triathalons, running or biking.

Many fitness models work as spokesmodels for products as well.  If you’re interested in working in television and going to public events, then you’ll need training and practice in walking, posture and speech.  Speaking models must project a warm, friendly and confident demeanor.  Think of the Bowflex models, they seem to be regular people that worked out and became a new person.  In reality they’re fitness models that use Blowflex to keep in shape.  As spokesmodels, it’s more likely that they may have even lost a little weight or gained muscle mass using the equipment, which means they’re sales pitch will sound more believable because it’s based in truth.

Fitness models have one of the coolest jobs in modeling.  They are good looking and are physically above average which opens more doors to success than just having a pretty face.  It’s the one category of modeling that combines modeling opportunities and spokesmodels.  This is why it’s a speciality of it’s own and working models have agents with industry connections in a variety of advertising channels like infomercials, commercials, events and magazines.

The Agent

An agent is responsible for procuring work in a certain part of the industry. This may include commercial print advertisinfitness magazinesg, TV commercials, episodic TV shows, and feature films to name a few. As with all modeling categories, fitness model agents are entitled to keep a percentage of your pay for jobs he or she books for you.

Once agencies have interviewed you and express their interest you will need to chose the right agency for you.  Agents are responsible for grooming models for the type of work the model is expected to book.   Models will book work with the clients that agents have.  With that in minds, be sure to ask agencies the names of clients they have done work with and see samples of the client work.  All of this will help you chose the right agency and have confidence in the type of work they produce.

After using Do I Look Like A Model?, you can confidently contact agents in your area or in the major markets and learn what they’re schedules are for interviewing new models.  Each agency represents models for different types of work and clients so don’t focus on just one or two agencies.  You will be shocked at how much work mid-size, local and regional agencies have for ‘local’ fitness models.  It’s a great way to build your resume and experience.

Insider Tip:  models that are successful on the local/regional levels have a higher chance of being picked up by national and international agencies than walk-ins.

Kids Modeling

Kids Modeling

If everyone says your child is so cute then avoid wasting time and money and find out if your baby or child could become a model.

Kids modeling is a great way to build your childs self-confidence and introduce them to new character building activities other than just sports.   Baby modeling and child modeling have become a huge niche modeling category because of the explosion of commercial media over the past several decades. Many young actresses, notably Katherine Heigl, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Brooke Shields, began as child models and are now household names on television and in movies.

We have, recently signed a contract with Ford Models for our daughter. The only costs they charge are $20/yr to use some online scheduling program, and $15/mo to maintain our daughter’s online portfolio. They did suggest a few professional photographers to use, if we choose to do so, but by no means was it required for forced. I think professional photographs are useful for portfolios if you’re serious about it, but I think you can also get by with amateur photos. For us, we’re going to use the amateur photos until we get a couple bookings and then take professional photos. – model parent

The Looks

Assessing your childs looks for modeling is completely subjective and each agency has a wide variety of ‘looks’ for kids because theirTyra-Gap baby model clients’ advertising range is so broad. This is precisely why Do I Look Like A Model professionals can help – by ascertaining if your child has any potential and if so, which photographs are the ones that will immediately grab an agents eye and interest.

In general, your child should be average in weight (not under-weight) and have an outgoing personality.  Some children light up for the camera. If your child is like this, then child modeling is an avenue worth pusuing.

Baby modeling is perfect for babies that everyone thinks are cute, not just your family.  Clients that book baby models or child models need kids that everyone thinks are cute because that means their looks appeal to a broad audience which is what makes advertising successful.

Child models with the ‘right looks’ and personalities can turn a fun hobby into a very lucrative career.  Kids can earn from $75/hour for a small photo shoot to over $10,000 for television commercials and millions for television shows and movies.  However, just because it’s an exciting and potentially money-making opportunity doesn’t always mean that your child is well suited for modeling.

The Attitude

Our industry experts’ best advice for parents just getting started is that when you get your answer from us and discover that your daughter or son has potential in modeling then talk to your kids.

Is your child really outgoing? Does he like a lot of attention? Can he handle everyone looking at him and telling him what to do? Everyone told us to get our kids into modeling because they are gorgeous and photogenic. Yes, total strangers would stop to stare and admire them. Even my OB did an double take commented on how striking my son was as an infant. We didn’t do it because it didn’t suit their personalities. I waited until they were old enough to weigh in on the subject, and they both said No. - Alison

lovely girlKids modeling is the same as teens and adults modeling; it is competitive and requires more than good looks.  Successful models have an outgoing personality, are professional at work and look healthy and happy.  Being handsome or pretty is great for broad appeal to a range of advertisers, however, it’s not just about being cute.  Flip through magazines and watch the Disney channel and you will see that the kids are happy, have their own little personalities and are outgoing.  These personality traits are precisely why it is important to talk with your kids about how they feel about having to turn ‘on’ their personalities infront of cameras and an audience of staff.

Once you’ve used Do I Look Like A Model? you will discover your child’s modeling potential and have confidence in approaching industry professionals.  Established agencies will meet with you and your child and go over what you’ll need to get started.  In the beginning it’s mostly time.  As parents, you’ll be responsible for driving your child to go-sees and sitting with them through auditions.  Obviously, the most important responsibility you have is to your child and to make the experience fun and not-demanding or stressed.

The Agentkids modeling jobs

In practice, most modeling jobs go to children who have already worked as models and have developed a working relationship with a modeling agency. For prospective models, the challenge is to land the first job. This usually happens through referrals by people already involved in modeling. It’s also possible to land jobs by contacting modeling agencies directly. Occasionally, a child may be “discovered” in a public place or through other grassroots means, such as:

  • Competing in local and national beauty contests
  • Working with local retailers for small-scale modeling
  • Entering mall fashion shows
  • Entering photo contests

Once your child is signed with an agency check with them on their requirements about participating in competitions, schools and professional photos.  Our experts can share hundreds of stories of parents scammed out of thousands of dollars for unusable photos, ‘training’ and all sorts of ingenious scams and ‘must haves’.  Be careful and be aware – if it sounds too good to be true then it’s fake and if it promises a career then it’s a lie.  Modeling is a career, not a winning lotto ticket.

Make sure which ever agency you choose, you do not fall for expensive ”training”. That is a scam. Your child does not need training to smile and take direction. No legitimate modeling agency charges for training or classes. They take a usually 10 percent or so fee right off the top for each job they get you. Be ready because for every job you get, you get about 20 rejections. Make it fun. - Jennifer

Commercial Modeling

Find out if your ‘average’ looks are what agencies are looking for and perhaps you can become a commercial model.  The commercial modeling category is filled with jobs for average looking people to appear in magazines, television, infomercials, commercials, websites, catalogues, brochures, stock photography and so many more modeling opportunities.  There are thousands of modeling and acting opportunities as a commercial model around the world.

The Look

commercial modelCommercial and print modeling has the most opportunities than any other type of modeling because there are no ’standards’ other than body:height proportionate. ‘The Look’ is simply that you’re a regular person selling products.  Don’t Squeeze the Charmin guy, PineSol lady and Verizon network guy are all great examples of everyday looking people becoming famous.  Each one has earned millions as the faces and spokesmodels of international brands.  We don’t know there names but all of us know there faces. commercial modeling

The Attitude

There is such a wide breadth of opportunities that models must be self-motivated and prepared.  Working commercial models don’t usually have the stereo-typcial ‘model attitude’.  There’s simply no time for primadonna’s, models work very hard in this category busily attending go-sees, auditions and fitings.

Pay attention to your agents instructions because they will coach you on what the client wants for their shoot.  For example, a sports equipment company is selling a volleyball and the photo shoot that they need models for will be a beach volleyball set.  As a model, you want to wear beach/athletic gear and if you know the brand and already have it then wear it.  On the other hand, if the photo shoot is for business attire, then be prepared with high heels, clean and professional hair and make-up.

The Agent

Agents are your business partner. They’re earning a percentage of what you commercial modelingget paid so their goal is to help you get the job.  Listen to them very carefully because they have been working with the client and clearly understand the ‘look’ the client wants.  If you’ve been asked to attend a go-see then you’re already 1/3 of the way to getting the job, the rest is up to your attitude and look.

With so many different types of job in commercial modeling, your earnings and agent commissions will be different from city to city and job to job. Adult commercial models can expect to make anywhere from $50 to $250 an hour depending on the market. Children are paid less than adults, but can earn up to $75 an hour. There is no way of knowing how much one can earn. I know a commercial model who earned $50,000 from one job, and I know people who have made $2,000 for an entire year.  So do yourself a favor and form a professional relationship with your agent, be courteous to other industry pros and network – you never know when a photographer will remember you and ask for you on their next job.

Professionals in the industry will tell you that having an agent is a must – that is true.  You can send your photos to modeling agencies all over the world for absolutely free.  Thousands of aspring models and parents who want to get their children into modeling do this everyday.  Modeling agents are busy with earning money from models they already represent. Modeling agents do everything from finding new clients that need models, fielding requests from active clients, to tracking down models booked on shoots that don’t show up on-time.  They have even less time to glance through unsolicited photographs from non-professionals to add to a wall of mmodeling agenciesodels they already have.

With client and model work overload, agency owners and agents frequently pass on opening emails and mail to the receptionist and office assistants.  Unfortunately, neither are trained or experienced in the art of looking at photo and seeing model potential.
